Entre os dias 26 de outubro e 2 de dezembro, Austrália, Nova Zelândia e Papua Nova Guiné receberão as disputas da edição 2017 da Copa do Mundo de Rugby League, a máxima competição entre seleções nacionais do rugby de 13 jogadores, versão menos difundida do rugby, mas dona do Mundial mais antigo da bola oval.

Serão ao todo 14 países em campo e nesta semana foram relevados oficialmente os elencos de cada seleção. Cada time contará com 24 atletas no elenco e, como esperado, Austrália, Nova Zelândia e Inglaterra são de longe as equipes mais fortes, que deverão monopolizar a luta pelo título. Os Kangaroos (a seleção australiana) terão disponível um “dream team”, mas alguns nomes importantes ficaram de fora, como o lesionado Darius Boyd. Nada comparável às perdas que os Kiwis (a seleção neozelandesa) tiveram, que incluíram Kieran Foran e Jesse Bromwich, ao passo que os ingleses não terão o astro Sam Tomkins. Muitos craques australianos e neozelandeses trocaram neste ano de seleção (o que é permitido no League), passando a defender ilhas do Pacífico com base em suas ascendências, como Jason Taumalolo e Manu Ma’u, que optaram por Tonga ao invés da Nova Zelândia, ou Jarryd Hayne, que escolheu Fiji ao invés da Austrália.

A NRL, a liga australiana, e a Super League (SL), a liga inglesa, dominam as listas de convocados, como as duas principais competições profissionais do mundo. Tais ligas, na verdade, são multinacionais, pois a NRL conta com um clube neozelandês (o Warriors) e a Super League com um time francês (o Catalan Dragons). E as divisões inferiores dessas ligas também têm clubes de outros países. O Championship inglesa (Ch) conta com outro clube francês (Toulouse), ao passo que a terceira divisão, a League One (L1) tem dois times galeses (Ironmen e Crusaders) e um canadense (Toronto Wolfpack). Já a Queensland Super Cup (QSC), uma das duas ligas profissionais que correspondem à segunda divisão australiana – junto da NSW Cup (NSWC) – tem uma equipe da Papua Nova Guiné (os Hunters).

O poder da NRL se provou com nada menos que 6 atletas da liga sendo convocados pela Inglaterra, apesar da força da Super League.
